Inside Information: Answers to Common Questions

Q: Where did the Life-Purpose System come from?

A: A number of different cultures, such as the ancient Hebrews, the Babylonians, and others worked with numeric systems. Pythagoras, the father of geometry and founder of the Pythagorean Mystery School, may have been the first Westerner to explore the archetypal meanings of numbers.

I learned the basics of the Life-Purpose System in 1984 from a charismatic teacher I’ll refer to as MB. (He never revealed where he learned this particular interpretation of the numeric archetypes.) I took careful notes—about twenty pages—and began to apply what I had learned by providing life-purpose readings for friends. Later, I began to offer professional consultations called “Spiritual Law Alignments.” Eventually I developed series of audiotapes tailored to each of the thirty-seven life paths (for all those born in the twentieth century). In this way I reached thousands of people. After working with the material for nearly ten years, I presented a weeklong training for psychotherapists and other health professionals, who could apply the Life-Purpose System to better understand and serve their clients.

Writing a book for the public at large seemed the next natural step.

Q: How/why is the system so accurate?

A: How can a system based upon adding up numbers of one’s date of birth on the Gregorian calendar possibly give valid, reliable, accurate, distinct, and useful information about one’s life purpose and core issues? I have no scientific explanation for how or why the system works; I only know that it does.

This system is distinctly different from "oracles" such as the Tarot, I-Ching, or Runes, through which individuals then project their own meaning and wisdom, applying it to their particular situations.

Trying to rationally explain the Life-Purpose System is like trying to find the square root of a sonnet. One might explain astrological systems by referring to how the macrocosm reflects the microcosm, pointing to the cycles of the sun and the moon, as well as our relationship (and ultimate connection) with the stars and heavenly bodies—but I prefer to remain in wonder at the mysterious mechanics and undiscovered laws of existence.

Q: Given the number of life paths in your book and the billions of people alive today, millions of people are working on each life path. How can that be? Aren’t we each a unique individual?

A: Like snowflakes, none of us is exactly alike. Each of us—even twins—meet with different lessons and life experience, and develop unique filters through which we perceive the world. Let me put it this way: We can probably agree that no two trees on the planet are precisely alike; yet we can make generalizations about how redwoods differ from pines or birches. In the same way, each of us is unique, but there are several dozen categories—birth numbers or life paths—and those of us working a particular life path share common issues, primary themes, potentials, and hurdles. Those of us on the same path share a core life purpose we will each work out in our own way, in our own time, experiencing both the positive and negative sides.

The lives of two people working out the same life path may look entirely different, even opposite, if one person has matured to the point where he or she is working it out in a more positive way, while the other manifests the negative side. Factors such as birth order, era, culture, gender, family dynamics, and others also influence our choices and responses, and how we shape our lives. Still, we each work within the context of our life path. Our lives are predestined in the sense that we are each given a particular mountain (life path) to climb, but how we make that climb and what we do on the way is a matter of free will. We are given the ballpark to play in, but how we play the game is up to us.

Q: What if I don’t know my date of birth?

A: In order to pinpoint your birth number (and corresponding life path), you need an accurate date of birth. Not having this information can be a kind of blessing, in the sense that you are called upon to study the material very carefully and to treat all numbers as your own. Thus, you could then use the book as an oracle and learn from every path, even as you hone in through self-reflection and intuition to find your home path.

Q: What if I was born exactly at midnight?

A: In one sense, it is rare to be born exactly at midnight; more likely, one is born a few minutes (or even seconds) before or after, but the birth records may not always reflect this. In fact—and this is an important point not covered in previous editions of this book—if you are born within a few minutes or even hours of midnight, you may find a close resonance with a secondary birth number.

I’ll use my own case as an example: I was born at 1:20 A.M.—a little over an hour past midnight. If I had been born an hour and a half earlier, I would have had a birth number from the day before. Instead of being born 2-22-1946 (a 26/8), I would have been born 2-21-1946 (a 25/7). So, while my birth number is clearly 26/8, I would have a strong resonance with many 25/7 qualities, and at times act and feel like a 25/7.

For someone born just before midnight, the same would apply. This person would tend to have a resonance with the birth number (life path) of someone born the following day.

Don't assume that if you are born just before (or after) midnight that you automatically have the next (or previous) sequential birth number. Do the math!

Q: Is one birth number (or composite relationship number) superior to or easier than another?

A: There are no inferior or superior numbers for an individual life path or for a relationship; only different issues that stand out—different, not better or worse. Each of us, and every relationship, has its strengths, vulnerabilities, and potential issues. Your life and relationships are shaped not merely by the numeric energies and issues on your path, but the way in which you (and your partner) manifest and express those energies—working them out in a more (or less) positive (developed, evolved, mature) manner.

Although we all may have moments when we wish we had different issues (or partners), this is generally a “grass is greener on the other side of the fence” tendency. Each of us has our own mountain to climb, and our own challenges. If it is any comfort, and if you believe in reincarnation, know that you will eventually work through all the numbers, issues, and paths of life. In a sense, we do this in one lifetime as we gain compassion for the paths and challenges of others.

Our own birth numbers represent areas of special challenge (and promise or potential). To take one example, the number 1 centers around creative energy (and its use). I’m working a 26/8 path—no 1 in this number. Yet I’m quite creative. Not having a 1 in my birth number means I am less likely to have pressing issues or obstructions in this area.

As I emphasize in the book, our life purpose—what we’re here to do—is not necessarily what comes easiest; rather it is the mountain we are here to climb—an area of special potential but also special challenges.

Mountain climbing—our evolutionary journey—is fraught with difficulty. But the climb makes us stronger, wiser, and more deeply human. And the higher we go, the more beautiful the view, because we begin to view our lives in perspective, to appreciate the vast panorama of the human experience, until finally we see the bigger picture, the many faces of God.

A Note from Dan

For centuries, observers of human nature have sought common denominators to better understand the forces that shape the human personality. Numerous tools of insight from both psychological and mystical traditions have emerged at different times and in different cultures. All of these methods and “maps of consciousness” represent our attempts to demonstrate that our universe and our psyches are not random or chaotic, but have a certain structure and order.

In the same tradition, this app reveals the Life-Purpose System, a clear, objective method for clarifying life purpose. Its ultimate source is veiled in mystery, but its origins may date back to the Pythagorean school of ancient Greece.

Many of the wise have advised: Know Thyself. I had studied numerous systems for insight, each with varying degrees of usefulness. Then I met an unusual man and learned the basics of what I call the Life Purpose System.

“The Life Purpose App” provides a powerful (and formerly secret) method to clarify each reader’s life path and purpose, including the core challenges and strengths you were born to address. Each of us is unique (just as no tree is exactly like any other). But just as redwoods that are different from birches or oaks, each of us is born with a different “frequency” or pattern we are here to fulfill. Anyone who has perused the book will enthusiastically testify to its accuracy and accessibility. Understanding your own life path—to reaffirm, clarify and focus your strengths and address your challenges—can be extremely validating and liberating. Equally so, understanding the challenges and gifts of your parents, children, and others can change relationships and lives.

Many readers have also enjoyed the sections addressing “The Energies of Relationship” and “The Nine-Year Cycles.” When you look up the section about your life path, prepare to be as amazed as I was when first exposed to this information.

I don’t claim that the Life-Purpose System is based upon conventional science or even logic; I can’t rationally explain how people’s seemingly arbitrary dates of birth on the Gregorian calendar could possibly reveal valid, reliable information about their life purpose. I only know, with certainty based on years of empirical testing, that the system works—that it can bring lives into focus.

Perhaps the validity of the Life-Purpose System stems from the holographic nature of the universe, in which each part mirrors and contains the whole, and in which the individual psyche fits within a larger pattern of order. By distilling complex variables into essential patterns, this system reveals the hidden forces behind our personalities, furnishing a clear lens from which to view the bigger picture of our lives.
